How Indigenous Canadian Communities Can Partner With the Canadian Academy of Guard Training

As a security training organization, we understand the importance of personal safety and the peace-of-mind it provides Canadian families across our country. It is our goal to partner with Indigenous communities and groups in order to provide as much access to the training required to help maintain said safety. That is why the Canadian Academy of Guard Training supports all Canadians, offering our education services through partnerships. Our vision is a more secure, aware and understanding country, and to promote programs to help individuals as well as groups gain these attributes and become security figures in their communities.

In order to understand and practice safety, we make it our responsibility to ensure that the education provided is of the highest quality. We understand that some groups are at risk of being disproportionately mentally and physically abused. In our commitment to support these communities, we are driven to partner with as many Indigenous and Canadian groups as we can. Our programs and services provide the best tools and knowledge needed to achieve this goal. If you’ve been considering partnership with the Canadian Academy of Guard Training, here’s how you can do it.

General requirements

While provinces may slightly vary on some security guard requirements, there are also several conditions that stay the same throughout. In order to get a security licence in Canada, you are required to have completed a 40-hour security training course that is approved by the province and also includes CPR and First Aid certifications. Upon finishing your security course, you must complete the provincial security licencing exam with a grade of 80% or higher. Finally, you must apply for your security licence through the province in which you reside. You must also possess a clean criminal record and be eligible to work in Canada.

Provincial requirements

With the general requirements across the board explained, here are some of the more conditional province requirements:

  • You must be 19 years of age to apply for a security licence in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and British Columbia. Every other province age requirement is 18 years old.
  • In Alberta and British Columbia an applicant must be fluent in English.
  • In New Brunswick you must be employed by a security guard company before submitting your application.

Though the differences are not drastically different, they can be significant when applying for a licence in your province. Ensure that you fit your provinces requirements when applying in order to avoid unnecessary roadblocks.

How our programs fit into these requirements

Our 40-hour basic security guard training program has been approved in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario and you can take your security exam as soon as you’re done. If you plan on working in another province, you must take training that has been licenced there. While we do not directly provide the exam for those who have completed the course, we are able to assist you in booking a time for you to write your provincial licensing exam. All of our courses are only available in English, which is perfect for getting your licence in any of the four provinces listed above. If you have further questions about our programs, check out our FAQ page or contact us.
